On May 8, 1725, Lovewell's Fight was fought from early morning until after sunset between a company of 34 Massachusetts rangers and 80 warriors of the Pequawket Tribe led by Paugus; the Indians were repulsed and their chief was killed. Capt. John Lovewell of Dunstable, Lieut. Jonathan Robbins, Ensign John Harwood, Robert Usher, Serjt. Jacob Fulham of Weston, Jacob Farrar of Concord, Josiah Davis, Thomas Woods, Daniel Woods, John Jefts, and Ichabod Johnson of Groton, and Jonathan Kittredge of Billerica were killed on the field of battle and were found and buried by Col. Tyng. Lieut. Josiah Farwell of Dunstable, Jonathan Frye, chaplain, of Andover, and Elias Barron of Groton were wounded and died by the way, and 9 others were wounded. The survivors, led by Ensign Seth Wyman, began the homeward march after midnight.
