Mount Howard, in northeastern Oregon’s Wallowa region, is a prominent mountain known as the upper destination of the Wallowa Lake Tramway, described as North America’s steepest tram. Its summit area includes the Summit Grill and Alpine Patio, making it both a scenic high point and a developed viewpoint. The mountain was named for Civil War general Oliver O. Howard. Part of its landscape received national recognition in June 2016, when the 1,084-acre Mount Howard-East Peak area was designated a National Natural Landmark for its botanically diverse montane grasslands and its endemic and rare plant species.
