Sacajawea Peak, in Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains, is the highest point in the Wallowas at 9,843 feet and one of the state’s tallest and most prominent summits. In the Eagle Cap Wilderness of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, it rises sharply above surrounding river valleys and anchors a distinct high block with nearby Matterhorn, Hurwal Divide, and the ridge toward Chief Joseph Mountain. Its great prominence and isolation make it a standout peak in the contiguous United States. Named for Sacagawea of Lewis and Clark Expedition fame, it kept its established spelling after a proposed change was rejected in 1999.
