Genesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford, west of Rochester, is a nonprofit living history campus of more than 600 acres devoted to preserving and interpreting 19th-century western New York. Conceived in 1966 by John L. "Jack" Wehle, it grew from his effort to save disappearing regional buildings and present them as settings for everyday life and work. Its Historic Village includes 68 restored, furnished buildings arranged to show phases of local development from early settlement to the gaslight era, with interpreters demonstrating trades and domestic labor. The site also includes art and costume collections, a carriage museum, heirloom gardens, a nature center, and a replica 19th-century baseball park.
