Trinity Episcopal Church began in 1917 after Dr. and Mrs. Fred Thompson moved to Lake Township in June 1916 and found no Protestant churches in the area. On February 11, 1917, eighteen people met in the Thompson home for a church school service conducted by Dr. Thompson, and attendance soon grew steadily. On May 6, 1917, the members of the Church School chose the name Trinity Mission and held the first regular service on May 20, 1917. The congregation bought property at Jefferson Avenue and Lake Boulevard, purchased the abandoned one-room French Erin Schoolhouse for $175, moved it from the lake side of Jefferson, added a parish hall, and completed the new building by 1922. By 1934 attendance had increased, and by fall 1945 the Diocese recognized the need for Trinity to maintain itself as a true parish. Trinity Parish was incorporated under Michigan law on October 30, 1945, allowing members for the first time to elect a vestry and assume full responsibility for the parish. As more families joined, the old buildings could no longer accommodate the congregation, and in 1954 construction began on the current church building, with groundbreaking services on Thanksgiving Day and a formal dedication on October 30, 1955. In fall 1964 the old church building was condemned and torn down, and during demolition an original blackboard from the old schoolhouse was found with French writing still on it. A committee for a new Parish Hall was appointed in early 1965, the nave's stained glass windows were designed and installed by the Willet Stained Glass Studios of Philadelphia, PA, groundbreaking took place in June 1966, and construction was completed in January 1967. Trinity marked its Golden Jubilee in 1967 with events including a tea and the renewal of wedding vows by couples, and on May 20, 2017, it held a Centennial Service followed by a catered celebration dinner. For more than 100 years, Trinity Episcopal Church has been an integral part of the history of St. Clair Shores and continues to serve the Lord there.
