Bergen-Byron Swamp is a 2,000-acre protected swamp and nature preserve in the towns of Byron and Bergen in western New York, preserving a wetland landscape more than 10,000 years old. Recognized early as a delicate natural environment, it was protected beginning in 1935 with the formation of the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society. In 1964, it became the first site designated a National Natural Landmark, giving it a notable place in United States conservation history. Its importance rests in its age, size, ecological community, and its long-standing role as an early example of organized wetland preservation.
