Established on July 14, 1932, on the Canada-United States border between Manitoba and North Dakota, the International Peace Garden was created to symbolize the peaceful relationship between the two countries. Set on the Turtle Mountain plateau, it combines formal gardens with distinctive natural surroundings and annually plants more than 150,000 flowers. Its notable features have included fountains, an 18-foot floral clock, commemorative bells, remains from the World Trade Center, a game warden museum, and the Masonic Auditorium. Long a gathering place for camps and events, it also gave North Dakota the slogan and later nickname Peace Garden State.
