Lake Metigoshe State Park is a 1,500-acre recreation area in North Dakota’s Turtle Mountains on the Canada–U.S. border, occupying the shores of Lake Metigoshe beside Manitoba’s Turtle Mountain Provincial Park. The lake’s name comes from an Ojibwe phrase meaning “clearwater lake of scrub-oaks,” and the broader region was long home to Blackfoot, Hidatsa, and Assiniboine peoples. The modern park developed during the New Deal, when Works Progress Administration crews began building facilities in 1934; it was formally established on February 17, 1937. Known for year-round outdoor recreation, it also includes the Turtle Mountain Outdoor Learning Center and the Skinautiques’ annual summer water-ski shows, a tradition since 1958.
