Bottineau Winter Park is a small alpine ski area in North Dakota’s Turtle Mountains, founded in 1969 by local businessmen and sustained by features such as full snowmaking, night skiing, and a snow tube park. Though modest in size, with eight trails and seven lifts, it stands out in a prairie state not usually associated with downhill skiing. Its greatest significance today lies in Annie’s House, a year-round lodge and visitor center opened in 2013 in memory of Ann Nicole Nelson, who was killed in the September 11 attacks. As North Dakota’s first facility centered on adaptive skiing, it serves people with physical and cognitive disabilities, their families, and wounded veterans.
