Gage Park, a 160-acre public park in Topeka established in 1899, grew from Guilford Gage’s donated farm into one of the city’s central recreational and cultural landscapes. Early plans by George Kessler, continued by Anton Reinisch, shaped it as a landscaped civic park rather than undeveloped open land. Over time it gained many of its best-known attractions, including the Topeka Zoo, Doran Rock Garden, Animaland, the Reinisch Rose Garden, theater, aquatic center, discovery center, and miniature train. The park has also figured in local controversy and fiction, while remaining a historic gathering place that blends gardens, family attractions, and civic institutions.
