Kaw River State Park is a 76-acre wooded state park along the Kansas River in Topeka and the only urban-type state park in Kansas. Once part of the Menninger complex and long known for the Menninger trails, the land changed hands after Menninger left Topeka in 2003, and wooded bluffs behind St. Francis Health Care were donated to the state in 2005. Trail work begun by earlier owners was continued by the Kansas Trails Council, and park manager Jeffery Bender developed the site beginning in 2008. It opened to the public on September 4, 2010, with trails, parking, signage, and river access near Topeka.
