Federal Hill is a ridge in Bloomingdale, northern New Jersey, within the New Jersey Highlands and the Passaic River watershed, where nearby rivers helped shape local settlement and industry. During the American Revolution, it was linked to a network of high-ground beacons used for wartime communication and was also associated with the Pompton Mutiny of 1781, after which some soldiers were punished there. In the twentieth century, the ridge held Camp Bergwald, operated by the German-American Bund until 1941. It has also long been the site of the Riverdale Quarry, whose stone has supported regional jobs and been used in prominent Washington, D.C., landmarks.
