Apshawa Preserve is a 576-acre county park and nature preserve in West Milford in the highlands of northern New Jersey, managed by Passaic County and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. Named for Apshawa Brook, which runs through the property, it includes the dammed brook that forms Butler Reservoir, long a defining feature of the preserve and the center of its main trail circuit. Mostly wooded with oak and maple, the preserve is known for about five miles of marked hiking trails and several connectors. Since 2010, part of it has been enclosed by a deer fence to protect native plants, and in September 2014 it was the site of New Jersey’s first known fatal black bear attack on a person.
