Mount Everett State Reservation in Mount Washington and Sheffield centers on 2,624-foot Mount Everett and forms part of a larger protected landscape in the southern Berkshires. Created by the Massachusetts legislature in 1908, the reservation gradually acquired land before its management shifted in 1975 to state natural resource officials and is now overseen by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Its significance lies in both scenery and conservation: broad summit views, the Appalachian Trail crossing the mountain, recreational use around Guilder Pond, and about 530 acres of old-growth forest, including eastern hemlock, white pine, hardwoods, and a long-undisturbed dwarf forest near the summit.
