Mount Race is a 2,365-foot peak in the Taconic Mountains of southwestern Massachusetts, near Mount Everett, noted for broad views, a steep eastern escarpment rising nearly 2,000 feet, and waterfalls including Race Brook Falls and Bear Rock Falls. Its summit lies on the divide between the Hudson and Housatonic watersheds, and the Appalachian Trail crosses an exposed crest of dwarf pitch pine and scrub oak. Much of the mountain is protected within Mount Washington State Forest. Its name comes from William Race, a local resident killed in 1755 during a colonial border dispute over ownership and farm tenancy, linking the mountain to the region’s contested settlement history.
