Ascutney Mountain Resort on the west side of Mount Ascutney in Brownsville, Vermont, grew from early skiing efforts that began in 1938 into a full downhill resort that operated from 1946 to 2010. It expanded with rope tows, grooming, snowmaking, multiple lifts, and dozens of trails, eventually offering extensive skiable terrain and modern lift service. Despite local traditions and repeated investment, financial troubles led to its collapse, asset dispersal, and the loss of its lodge in 2015. That same year, local residents and conservation partners acquired the property, and Ascutney was reborn as a smaller, community-based recreation area run for public use.
