Best's Covered Bridge in West Windsor, Vermont, was built in 1889 to carry Churchill Road over Mill Brook on a short, lightly traveled rural crossing. Its significance lies in its rare laminated arch construction, unusual for a nineteenth-century Vermont bridge, with layered planking bolted into arches and suspension rods supporting the floor system within a protective covered frame. The bridge is generally credited to local wheelwright Stephen F. Hammond, though some later accounts named Amasa W. Swallow because of confusion over a town report and the nearby farm he owned. Its distinctive engineering and preservation led to National Register listing in 1973.
