Built from locally quarried limestone in 1871 by stone mason Samuel S. Taylor, this culvert is the oldest span in Clark County that a traveler can still cross and one of the oldest stone bridges still in use in Ohio. Taylor, a Civil War veteran born in 1837 and died in 1930, made it his first public works project before working on the Mill Run underground sewer in 1877, Champion’s East Street shops in 1883, and the foundation for Springfield’s city hall in 1890. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, it remains a rare surviving early stone span in active use.
