Sylvan Lake was created in 1837-1838 as a reservoir for a proposed canal link between Fort Wayne and Lake Michigan and was part of the 1836 internal improvements program. It became a popular resort area and was the site of Chautauqua from 1878 to 1906. It also provided hydraulic power. An earthen dam on the Elkhart River impounds 630 acres of water.
