Picketpost Mountain, a prominent peak near Superior in southern Tonto National Forest, rises 4,375 feet above sea level and about 2,000 feet above its base, making it a distinctive landmark east of Phoenix. Its name came from an early military camp established at its base by General George Stoneman in 1870, when soldiers used the summit as a lookout and called it “Picket Post” for its sentinel role. The camp later grew into the town of Superior, linking the mountain to the area’s early settlement. Today it is also well known as a hiking destination, especially for the summit mailbox that holds trail log books.
