Picket Post Mountain served as a landmark and lookout point during the Indian Wars and was the site of an outpost of Camp Pinal, located at the head of Stoneman Grade to the east. Soldiers there protected Pinal City and the Silver King Mine from Apache raiders. It was also the home of Col. William Boyce Thompson, a mining magnate and founder of the Southwest Arboretum at the foot of the mountain.
