Justice James Clark McReynolds was born here in 1862 and kept this as his home throughout his life. He practiced law in Nashville and New York, served as Assistant U.S. Attorney General from 1903 to 1907, and as U.S. Attorney General from 1913 to 1914 became known for enforcing the Sherman Anti-Trust Law. He then served for 27 years as a distinguished Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1914 to 1941 and opposed New Deal measures. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1946.
