In 1869, Easthampton honored its sons who died for their country during the Great Rebellion. Among them was Major General George Crockett Strong, a student at Williston Seminary who entered West Point from this congressional district in 1853, graduated third in the class of 1857, received a mortal wound leading the assault on Fort Wagner, and died July 30th 1863 at age 30. Those killed in battle were William Hickey of Company B, 31st Massachusetts Infantry, at Camp Bisland, Louisiana, April 13th, 1863, age 47; Daniel W. Lyman of Company K, 52nd Massachusetts Infantry, at Port Hudson, Louisiana, June 14th, 1863, age 20; Charles Tencellent of Company A, 7th Connecticut Infantry, at Olustee, Florida, February 16th, 1864, age 26; and Roland S. Williston of Company C, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, at Culpepper C.H., Virginia, August 18th, 1862, age 27. Those who died as prisoners of war at Andersonville, Georgia, were Alvin W. Clark of Company A, 27th Massachusetts Infantry, November 20th, 1864, age 24; Oliver A. Clark, June 27th, 1864, age 23; Rufus Robinson, July 12th, 1864, age 29; Ezra O. Spooner, August 13th, 1864, age 18; Frederick P. Stone, January 10th, 1865, age 20; and Charles Rensellar of Company F, 54th Massachusetts Infantry, age 21. Those who died of disease were Clinton Bates of Company K, 52nd Massachusetts Infantry, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, July 22nd, 1863, age 25; Augustus M. Clapp of Company A, 3rd Ohio Cavalry, at Nashville, Tennessee, March 9, 1863, age 16; James H. Clark of Company H, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, at Alexandria, Virginia, August 14th, 1863, age 22; Chauncey R. Hendrick of Company B, 31st Massachusetts Infantry, at East Hampton, September 11th, 1862, age 41; Daniel Kane of Company K, 37th Massachusetts Infantry, at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 15th, 1862, age 17; Elisha C. Lyman of Company A, 27th Massachusetts Infantry, at Newbern, North Carolina, December 28th, 1863, age 23; Henry Lyman of Company A, 27th Massachusetts Infantry, at Newbern, North Carolina, August 5th, 1863, age 31; Salmon H. Lyman of Company A, Anderson's Zouaves, at Davis Island Hospital, August 25th, 1862, age 22; Herbert W. Pomeroy of Company K, 52nd Massachusetts Infantry, at Plaquemine, Louisiana, January 28th, 1863, age 18; Lewis P. Wait of Company K, 52nd Massachusetts Infantry, at East Hampton, November 2, 1862, age 22; and Charles L.
