Tallulah Gorge State Park preserves one of Georgia’s most dramatic river landscapes beside Tallulah Falls in northeast Georgia. Its centerpiece is Tallulah Gorge, a canyon about 1,000 feet deep carved by the Tallulah River, with six waterfalls dropping about 500 feet in a mile. The gorge became a major tourist destination after railroad access expanded in 1882, and efforts to protect it were under discussion by 1905, though state preservation failed in 1911. The park was finally established in 1993 after cooperation with Georgia Power. Today it reflects both natural grandeur and the lasting effects of tourism, hydroelectric development, and conservation.
