McClellan Peak is an 8,368-foot mountain in Washington’s Alpine Lakes Wilderness on the south rim of The Enchantments basin, within the Stuart Range of the Cascades. Named for Army explorer George B. McClellan after his 1853 visit, it rises in one of the range’s most rugged landscapes of sharp ridges, granite walls, deep glacial valleys, and many mountain lakes. The peak and surrounding terrain were formed by the geologic building of the North Cascades, then reshaped by Pleistocene glaciers, uplift, and faulting. Its runoff feeds tributaries of the Wenatchee River, and its climate brings heavy winter precipitation, dense snow, avalanche danger, and clearer summer skies.
