Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for freight agent Edmund D. Brigham around 1908 and completed the next year in Glencoe, Illinois, this house is a significant Prairie School residence and a rare realization of Wright’s published ideas about modern domestic design. It adapted his 1907 “A Fireproof House for $5000” concept and is notable as the only one of those specific designs actually built in concrete. With a central two-story block, one-story wings, casement windows, and prominent piers, it expresses the low horizontal character of Wright’s work while also reflecting his interest in practical planning, new materials, affordability, and fire resistance.
