John Nance Garner served as Vice President of the U.S. from 1933 to 1941. He began his career as Uvalde County Judge from 1893 to 1896, served in the Texas Legislature from 1898 to 1902, and served in the U.S. Congress from 1904 to 1932, where in his last term he was Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was also an able trial lawyer, rancher, banker, and benefactor of Southwest Texas Junior College. He married Ettie Rheiner, had a son, Tully, and one grandchild, Genevieve G. Currie. He was known as "Cactus Jack" for his unique western individualism.
