John Nance Garner, born Nov. 22, 1868, served in the Texas Legislature from 1898 to 1902, in the U.S. Congress from 1902 to 1932, including his last term as Speaker of the House, and as Vice-President of the United States from 1933 to 1941. His home, built in 1920, was the scene of visits by world figures and was given to Uvalde in 1952 by Vice-President Garner and his son Tully. It also stands as a memorial to Ettie R. Garner, who was secretary to her husband during his long career as a statesman.
