On May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old former student, Salvador Ramos, carried out a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and 2 teachers and injuring many others after first shooting and wounding his grandmother. Most of the killings occurred within minutes in adjoining classrooms 111 and 112, but officers waited in the hallway for more than an hour before confronting him. The attack became one of the deadliest school shootings in American history and drew intense scrutiny of law enforcement failures, later judged both by state officials and a Texas House committee as grave and systemic. Its aftermath helped drive national debate and federal gun reform.
