The Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa, is a national center for preserving and interpreting Danish immigration and Danish American life. Emerging from a 1979 proposal by Dana College professors, it took root in Elk Horn and Kimballton after local support and a land donation in 1983, then opened its permanent building in 1994. Its collections exceed 35,000 artifacts, and its exhibitions trace Danish immigrant experiences from 1840 to the present. The institution also includes a genealogy and education center, historic houses, and the Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park, making it a major place for exploring Danish American history, art, family research, domestic life, and landscape design.
