Audubon presents itself as a community near the crossroads of the nation, with parks and trails, attractions and celebrations, quality health care, and good schools. It honors John James Audubon through a twenty-one-foot stained-glass clock of Audubon and his dog Zephyr on a Victorian building, ceramic tile mosaics of his bird prints from Birds of America along a two and a half mile Birdwalk in downtown and City Park, a large tile mural of Audubon and a Great Blue Heron in the library entry, a bronze statue in John James Audubon Plaza, and a mural in the U.S. Post Office painted by Virginia Snedeker under the Works Program Administration created by President Roosevelt in the nineteen thirties to provide jobs during the Depression. South of town, Albert Park includes the trailhead for the twenty mile paved T-Bone Trail and Albert the Bull, a nationally known thirty-foot-tall, forty-five-ton sculpture recognizing the impact of the beef industry in Audubon County. The Audubon County Courthouse, one of twelve built in 1929 and on the National Historic Register, remains a virtually unchanged example of Art Deco design and stands beside a Veteran’s Memorial wall honoring county men and women who have served the country. The John James Audubon Cultural Center holds antique dolls, furnishings, and toys, and Nathaniel Hamlin Park and Museums south of Audubon on Highway 71 preserves buildings and exhibits depicting past life, including a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, meeting room and kitchen, farm windmills, a mural of the cattle industry, a live elk family, a native trail, and the former County Home mansion with antiques. John James Audubon traveled the country several times in search of birds to illustrate, embodied the spirit of young America when the wilderness was limitless and enticing, closely observed birds and their habits, and, though an avid hunter, showed deep appreciation and concern for conservation.
