Quinlan Schoolhouse was one of thirteen one-room schoolhouses in Charlotte, built around 1850 and used until 1950 to educate children of nearby farm families. Children between the ages of five and eighteen attended, and older students often helped younger ones with their lessons so the teacher could work with groups of different learning abilities. Instruction included arithmetic, spelling, reading, penmanship, geography, and English. The school was named for the Quinlan family, who owned a farm on Spear Street in the eastern part of Charlotte. Attendance varied widely with the seasons because children were needed for planting and harvesting, and former students recalled bringing potatoes in winter to bake on the big stove for lunch. The building was later disassembled and moved to the Town Green in 1996, and local residents donated period furnishings connected to the years when the school was in use.
