Cimarrona Peak is a 12,570-foot mountain in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, about four miles north of Williams Creek Reservoir, within the Weminuche Wilderness of the San Juan National Forest. Set in a remote high-country landscape of broad alpine basins and rugged summits, it is reached chiefly by the Cimarrona Trail, an 8.5-mile out-and-back route that passes the mountain’s northeast side and continues to a junction with the Continental Divide Trail at Squaw Pass. Beginning north of the reservoir and entering the wilderness, the trail also passes a natural arch. The peak’s present importance lies in its place within protected mountain terrain experienced through hiking and backcountry travel.
