The Weminuche Wilderness is Colorado’s largest wilderness area, a vast protected backcountry in the San Juan Mountains near Silverton, Durango, and South Fork. Split by the Animas River Gorge and the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, it includes the rugged Needle Mountains, volcanic terrain to the east, and elevations from river valleys to Windom Peak. Its landscape was shaped by ancient uplift, volcanism, and later glaciation, creating sharp peaks, cirques, and broad U-shaped valleys. Forest, alpine tundra, and abundant wildlife span its ecological zones. Nearly 500 miles of trails, including part of the Continental Divide Trail, make it both accessible and notably wild.
