Mount Sniktau is a 13,240-foot Front Range peak in central Colorado near Loveland Pass, the Eisenhower Tunnel, and Interstate 70, with runoff flowing through Clear Creek to the South Platte and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. Its unusual name is linked to journalist Edwin H. N. Patterson, who used the pen name Sniktau, though the name’s exact origin is uncertain. Earlier names included Big Professor and Engelmann before Mount Sniktau became established in 1926. The mountain is especially valued as an accessible high-altitude hike, offering a short but steep route above treeline and broad summit views. It also figured briefly in Denver’s unsuccessful bid for the 1976 Winter Olympics.
