Formerly known as Brown's Burying Ground, the cemetery was purchased from George W. "Hoodoo" Brown and Sarah E. Brown on March 23, 1887, for the sum of $2,000.00. The Browns asked that the name be changed to Graceland in memory of a small daughter who had recently died. A corporation was formed, and in 1935 a cemetery district was incorporated.
