Dalton Gang Hideout and Museum

In Meade, Kansas, a house once owned by Eva Dalton and her husband, John N. Whipple, became the center of a local tradition linking the property to the Dalton Gang. After Whipple lost the property in 1892, later residents found a concealed passage running from beneath the stairwell through the basement to the barn, fueling stories that Eva’s outlaw brothers had used the place as a refuge, though no documentation places them there after 1890. Opened to the public in 1940 and expanded through 1941 restoration projects, the site grew into a historic complex that blends folklore, frontier crime, and New Deal-era preservation.
