The Ward W. Willits House in Highland Park, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1901, stands among the earliest major Prairie School residences and marks an important stage in the emergence of his mature domestic style. Built for businessman Ward Winfield Willits, the two-story house is distinguished by its cruciform plan centered on a chimney core, projecting wings, strong horizontality, and interior spaces that open toward verandas and terraces to connect with the landscape. Wright shaped nearly every detail, from stained glass to furniture and lighting. Restored after its 1983 purchase, it remains a notable landmark of Prairie School design and Wright’s early career.
