In the spring of 1639, under the leadership of the Rev. Adam Blakeman, Mac’s Harbor was the traditional landing place of Stratford’s first settlers. On the right, at the inner end of the harbor, stood the first meeting house and burial ground, and across the harbor at the stone embankment the first tide mill was erected. This village of Cupheag was renamed Stratford in 1643 after Stratford-on-Avon, England.
