Bearhead Mountain is an 8,406-foot peak in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park in Montana. One of the range’s named summits, it is significant not only as part of the park’s rugged landscape but also for the history carried in its name. The mountain recalls kyáiyótokan, a Piegan warrior remembered for his war against the Assiniboine White Dog. He survived the Marias Massacre and was the brother of Chief Heavy Runner, a confidant of Glacier writer James Willard Schultz. The peak thus links Glacier’s dramatic scenery to Blackfeet history and to the human lives behind the region’s landscape.
