Appistoki Peak is an 8,169-foot mountain in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park, Montana, rising on the southeast shore of Two Medicine Lake just north of Mount Henry. Its significance lies in how its name reflects the park’s early mapping and a cross-cultural misunderstanding. Topographer R. T. Evans, working on an early map of Glacier, asked his Blackfeet guide for a term meaning “looking over something.” The guide instead supplied “Appistoki,” identified in the account as the Indian god who looks over everything and everyone, and that name became attached to the peak.
