Solstice Calendar by John Van Alstine was installed to celebrate the new Abell Library and commemorate the Texas Sesquicentennial. The 39 tons of pink granite were taken from the same quarry as the stone used to build the state capitol in Austin. Abell Library provided a modern, open-stack concept that has since been updated to integrate high-tech collaborative spaces and includes the Kenneth W. Street Advocacy Courtroom, Lemuel Scarbrough Center for Writing, archives, and special collections.
