At the site of Old Allatoona Church lay the extreme left of the Federal line on the Dallas-New Hope front, where Johnston’s and Sherman’s forces had been in daily conflict since May 25, 1864. On June 3, Hovey’s 1st Division, 23d Army Corps, U.S., drove Armstrong’s Confederate cavalry from the road, thereby uncovering the right of the Confederate line, Walker’s Division of Hardee’s Corps, near the Foster house one mile southwest. Seizure of this road broke the ten-day stalemate, and the opposing line shifted east to the Kennesaw front.
