Bull of the Woods Wilderness is a protected area in Oregon’s northwestern Cascades within Mount Hood National Forest, established in 1984 and spanning 37,607 acres of steep, rugged forest. It includes low-elevation old growth, about a dozen lakes, and the headwaters of the Collawash and Little North Santiam rivers, and forms part of a larger undeveloped mountain landscape with nearby protected land. Named from logging slang for an experienced foreman, the wilderness is known for difficult travel, high peaks, an abandoned fire lookout, rich conifer forests, northern spotted owl habitat, recreation trails, and traces of 19th-century gold mining. Despite major fires in 2020 and 2021, some unburned forest remains.
