After purchasing the closed Eureka Methodist Church building and property with plans to remodel the church into their home, the Wells found the building too far gone to salvage. They saved what they could and bought a home to place on the property. Nancy named the bell "Esmeralda" after the movie The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, kept it painted, and enjoyed letting visitors ring it. On the anniversary of the tower collapse, April 27, 1978, Nancy rang the bell once for each of the men who died in that disaster.
