Covered bridges were roofed to keep their main structural timbers dry, because even solid-looking timbers would quickly rot if left exposed to alternating rain, dampness, and sun. The Hune Covered Bridge was built by Rolla Merydith and uses a 12-panel Long truss. In 1961, Dr. H.B. Hune, then 90 years old, recalled life on his father's farm in the 1870's, when surveyors came to choose the site for the bridge over the Little Muskingum River and Merydith boarded at the farm during construction. He also remembered that stone for the abutments was quarried on the Hune farm, yellow poplar from the farm was used to make the trusses, and Merydith brought his young son to play with the Hune boy.
