In A.D. 1884, citizens of Lewis County, Kentucky, honored soldiers from the county who lost their lives in the War for the Preservation of National Unity, 1861–1865, affirming “One Country and One Flag” and declaring that “The war for the Union was right. Everlastingly right: and the war against the Union was wrong. Forever wrong.” The tribute invoked Resaca, Vicksburg, Atlanta, Chicamauga, Mission Ridge, and Stone River, included verses beginning “On fame’s eternal camping ground” and “Nor shall your glory be forgot,” and named the dead from Company K, 28th Kentucky Infantry; Company E, 22nd Kentucky Infantry; Company I, 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry; Company I, 4th Kentucky Infantry; 10th Kentucky Cavalry Volunteers; Company C, 54th Kentucky Mounted Infantry; Company A, 45th Kentucky Mounted Infantry; and Company K, 16th Kentucky Volunteers Infantry.
