Gemmell Park honors Dr. James Gemmell, eleventh president of Clarion State College from 1960 to 1976, in recognition of his contributions to higher education in the commonwealth and his early and untiring efforts to establish the state system of higher education, which resulted in the elevation of Clarion State College to Clarion University of Pennsylvania on July 1, 1983.
