Foxburg Country Club in Foxburg, Pennsylvania, established in 1887, is recognized as the oldest golf course in continuous use in the United States. Its origins trace to Joseph Mickle Fox, who learned golf at St. Andrews in Scotland in 1884 from Tom Morris Sr. and brought clubs and gutta percha balls home to Clarion County. After he first laid out an eight-hole course on his summer estate, growing local interest led to a larger club course on land he provided rent free, expanded to nine holes in 1888.
