In the Strawberry Moon of 1817, Chief Clermont's Osage village near Claremore Mound was wiped out by Cherokees. This Osage band from Missouri had settled near the mound at the insistence of fur traders of St. Louis. One hundred years later, the Osages became the wealthiest Indians in Oklahoma after oil was discovered on a reservation 2 miles west of the mound.
